How We Review

Our structured evaluation process for every category we cover.

ScoreCardHQ uses a structured evaluation process for every category we cover. This page explains how we research, evaluate, and rank providers — and why we believe this approach produces more trustworthy results than typical review sites.

Our 6-Step Process

1

Category Research

Before evaluating any providers, we research the category itself. This includes:

Understanding the market: Who are the major players? What business models exist? What are the typical pricing structures?

Identifying key factors: What matters most to consumers in this category? What separates good providers from bad ones? What are the common complaints and pitfalls?

Consulting authoritative sources: We review guidance from relevant government agencies, industry associations, and consumer protection organizations.

For example, when reviewing LLC formation services, we consult resources from the Small Business Administration and state-specific business filing requirements. When reviewing home service contractors, we reference licensing requirements from state contractor licensing boards.

2

Criteria Development

Based on our category research, we develop specific evaluation criteria. These criteria vary by category but typically include:

Core Service Quality: Does the provider deliver on its primary value proposition?

Pricing and Value: Is the pricing transparent? Competitive? Are there hidden fees?

Customer Experience: What do actual customers report? Are there patterns in complaints?

Reliability and Reputation: How long has the provider been in business? What's their track record?

Transparency: Is information about services, pricing, and policies easy to find?

We weight these criteria based on what matters most in each category. For emergency home services, availability and response time might be weighted heavily. For business formation services, accuracy and compliance support might matter more.

3

Provider Identification

We compile a list of notable providers operating at a national level (or with broad regional availability where national options are limited). We prioritize:

  • Established companies with verifiable track records
  • Providers with sufficient market presence to evaluate
  • Options across different price points and service models

We don't limit ourselves to advertisers or affiliate partners because we don't have any. This means our provider list is based on market research, not business relationships.

4

Evaluation

Each provider is assessed against our category-specific criteria. Our evaluation methods include:

Official Source Review: We examine provider websites, terms of service, pricing pages, and official documentation.

Regulatory Verification: Where applicable, we verify licensing, registration, and regulatory standing through official databases.

Customer Feedback Analysis: We review customer feedback across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. A single negative review tells us little; consistent themes across dozens of reviews are meaningful.

Direct Testing: Where feasible, we test services directly. This might include going through a signup process, contacting customer support, or using the actual service.

Industry Comparison: We compare each provider against others in the category to understand relative strengths and weaknesses.

5

Ranking and Selection

Based on our evaluation, we select and rank the top providers. Not every provider makes the cut.

Our rankings reflect our overall assessment of value for a general audience. We recognize that the "best" provider depends on individual circumstances — that's why we explain our reasoning and highlight which providers excel in specific areas.

We avoid arbitrary numerical scores (like "8.7 out of 10") because they create false precision. Instead, we explain in plain language what each provider does well and where they fall short.

6

Publication and Updates

Reviews are published with:

  • The date of initial publication
  • The date of most recent update
  • Our evaluation criteria for that category
  • Clear explanations of our rankings
  • Disclosure of any limitations in our research

We revisit reviews periodically — typically every 6-12 months, or sooner if significant changes occur in the market. When we update a review, we note what changed.

What We Don't Do

We Don't Accept Payment for Rankings

Providers cannot pay to be included, ranked higher, or reviewed more favorably. Period.

We Don't Use Affiliate Links

We don't earn commissions when you click through to a provider or sign up for their service. This eliminates the financial incentive to recommend high-commission providers over better alternatives.

We Don't Guarantee Outcomes

Our reviews are informational. Your results may vary based on your specific situation, location, needs, and how you interact with the provider.

We Don't Provide Professional Advice

Our reviews are not substitutes for advice from attorneys, financial advisors, licensed contractors, or other qualified professionals.
